NUMBNESS AND TINGLING

NUMBNESS AND TINGLING

section-064d32a

Individuals who experience numbness or tingling in any part of the body may be contending with an impingement of a nerve, a nerve root, or possibly even the spinal cord itself. These disruptions of the body's internal communications system can produce many of the symptoms associated with sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, neuropathy of the feet as well as other painful conditions. At Xtreme Spine & Joint, Dr. Robert Gordon applies "whole body" care to relieve symptoms through spinal adjustments and other non-invasive techniques.

When you experience tingling, numbness, pain or other symptoms, it is only natural to assume that the problem originated in that particular part of the body. Sometimes that turns out to be the case, for example the numbness and tingling of carpal tunnel syndrome originates in the inflamed tissues around the median nerve in the wrist. However, sometimes the odd sensations you feel are merely referred to that part of the body from another point along the nerve pathway.

Sciatica patients are all too familiar with this situation. Although the pain feels like it originates in the hip or upper leg, an impingement of a lumbar or sacral nerve root in the lower back is actually the cause of the discomfort. This pinching of the nerve root may be due to spinal stenosis, a slipped or flattened disc, or a vertebral misalignment.

Eliminate the "Electric Sensations"
Since the nerves are responsible for relaying messages between the spine and your extremities, you might experience pain or "electric sensations" running through the buttock or leg, tingling or numbness in the leg or foot, and loss of muscle control in the limb. Nerve impingement higher up the spinal column can cause similar symptoms in the arms and hands. In some cases they may even mimic the signs of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Dr. Gordon employs several non-surgical treatment methods to relieve nerve impingement and restore normal function. If a disc problem is causing the nerve impingement, for instance, we may prescribe a method of flexion/distraction that uses a special table to relieve pressure between vertebrae, shifting the discs back into their correct position.
